The Bear Grylls survival knife is one of the most popular knives around. Many questions have surrounded how reliable a knife it actually is. The first run of these knives were certainly not worthy of it being called a survival knife. Gerber (the company responsible for the production of this knife) heard the complaints and came back with a strong showing in its latest installment.

A survival knife is one that MUST come through when you need it. It must also be one that you can use for years so that you can get a good feel for it and know how to properly utilize it and determine what limitations it might have. We took the Bear Gryls Ultimate Survival knife out for about two weeks of hard use. I also asked some of our students at Nature Reliance School to use it and report back.

It was also used at length during two of our recent survival classes by people who were new to knife use. I then personally used it for about a week of video making in which I did basically every bushcraft chore one could do. We then got together with the crew from Dan’s Depot to make a video that shows a few of the uses of this knife and to share with you the basic specs of it as well as some of the limitations it might contain.

Don’t let the word limitations keep you from it. There is no one single tool out there, in our estimation, that meets all the needs of bushcrafting and survival training. With that said, any owner of this tool will be pleased with how it performs and will be able to utilize it for an extended period of time. Watch this video to see what we thought of it. Also follow the info below the video to see how you can get in the running to win this exact knife!

To win this knife all you need to do is watch the video and answer the following question:

In the video who did I say should lash this knife to the end of pole and utilize it as a spear?

Post your answer, name, and e-mail address in the box below to enter. The winner will be announced June 16th 2014.

Thanks for sharing so much good outdoor knowledge. My purchases have been great, with high quality and good value. That’s money well spent. Craig C seems like a great guy. It would be fun to sit down with the guy and trade stories. He should write a book of stories and survival info.

This knife has a lotof GOOD features, however if it is to be used in a survival situation where you DO NOT wish to be seen, it sure would help if the knife did’t scream with bright ORANGE in its color sceam. Just my suggestion.

This knife (in my estimation) is best used by a beginner. One who may be lost and need to be found, rath than someone who wants to stay hidden.

So, one question. Why do you think it is such a bad idea to use a knife as a spear tip?

Because you would be better served to make a spear with the knife. You seriously run a risk of breaking the knife if you use it as a spear

Some of my fellow scouts have this knife a and have let me use it for a day or two and I can’t tell you how much I love it. Ps I recently just bought a Hennessy hammock deluxe Asim explorer and I love it as much as you said we would on your review. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

Sorry you must have missed a large portion of the video. Any tool has its own faults, including this one. I simply pointed some out on this so as to be up front as possible. It also has some very good points, and I believe it will make a great starter knife for someone.

This email hit my inbox at 5:00 pm yesterday. I opened it at 9:00 am this morning and watched the ENTIRE review, (meaning I could have just read the answer in the comments below or, if I didn’t believe them I could have only watched til I got the answer), however, I watched ALL 8 minutes and 17 seconds. It was a FINE, COMPREHENSIVE, and COMPLETE, review. HOWEVER, I am PISSED OFF ROYALLY on account of the fact that the contest entry space is dead and does NOT allow inputting your information in order to enter. In retrospect therefore, I have thought of ONE LAST USE for this knife not touched upon in the video. I won’t say it but I will give the answer in the form of a question that YOU can answer. “Who, in the video or responsible for the follow up contest entry capability, should stick this knife where the sun don’t shine?” LoL, gotcha!! Lucky thing it was a good review or I might unsubscribe.

Hey…link is not working for me either (tried in IE and Firefox). I guess that is why so many folks are posting the answer as a comment :). Only a Dufus (Doofus) would use a knife as a spear. Anyone having been through NRS Wilderness Survival Basics course would already know this 🙂 Thanks Craig!

A doofus, perhaps going by the name Bear Grylls, would attach the knife to a spear.
